This comprehensive training programme equips you with the skills and knowledge to design high-quality ontologies. You'll gain a solid understanding of ontology design principles and best practices, enabling effective information organisation and knowledge sharing within your organisation.
Ontology Design is a two day training programme presented by Semantic Partners.
In this course, the participant will learn how to:
- Understand the principles and methods underlying ontology design
- Pick classes and distinguish them from individuals
- Master different types of hierarchies and construct taxonomies with the right structure
- Single out entities and figure out their identity conditions
- Evaluate upper-level ontologies and choose the fittest one for you
- Construct good definitions and vocabularies
- Assess the adequacy of your ontology
- Extract the latent ontology from any information system and make it explicit
Course Outline
- General Tenets
- How To Pick Classes
- Taxonomy Structure
- Identity Conditions and Individuation
- Upper-level Ontologies
- How To Define
- Vocabularies and Naming Patterns
- Adequacy Assessment Methods
- Ontological Commitments
Who should take this course
If you are already familiar with knowledge graphs and the Semantic Web standards but you are unsure about how to construct an ontology from scratch, then this is the course for you, as you will learn concepts and methods for designing high quality ontologies in a rigorous and systematic way.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of RDF; knowledge of OWL is an advantage, but is not essential (Introduction to Knowledge Graphs course or equivalent). Some familiarity with data modelling.
Course Delivery
The course consists of a series of modules with a mix of frontal teaching, class interactions, and hands on exercises to put what you learn into practice straight away. The environment for the exercises is provided by Semantic Partners hosted in the cloud.
